Ostafrikasaurus was a carnivorous theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of southeastern Tanzania. It is known only from a fossil tooth that is 49 mm (1.9 in) long. Paleontologist Eric Buffetaut claims it is the oldest evidence of a Spinosaurid dinosaur (a type of crocodile -like dinosaur that ate fish ); It appeared 148 million years ago.

The new taxon is the earliest currently known spinosaurid. It sheds some light on aspects of dental evolution in spinosaurids, which seems to have been characterised by reduction of the denticles. Keywords : Dinosauria, Theropoda, Spinosauridae, teeth, Late Jurassic, Tendaguru, Tanzania. Overview.

Ostafrikasaurus has been tentatively estimated at 8.4 metres (28 feet) long and weighing 1.15 tonnes (1.27 short tons; 1.13 long tons ). The holotype tooth is 46 millimetres (1.8 inches) long, has a curved front edge, and is oval-shaped in cross section. If Ostafrikasaurus is a spinosaurid it would be the only known spinosaurid to live in the Jurassic. The size of Ostafrikasaurus is unknown, but the tooth is 49 millimeters long. The size of the serrations of Ostafrikasaurus' teeth are quite large, meaning that Ostafrikasaurus wasn't the fish-eating specialist it was destined to be yet. Instead, it would have hunted dinosaurs like Dicraeosaurus and Kentrosaurus. Both of these dinosaurs would have also been the prey of Veterupristisaurus.

(Requested by one of our mods) In 1909, Cristatusaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous Period of what is now Niger, 112 million years ago. It was a baryonychine member of the Spinosauridae, a group of large bipedal carnivores with well-built forelimbs and elongated, crocodile-like skulls.
